Microplastics and anthropogenic fibre concentrations in lakes reflect surrounding land use

چکیده

Pollution from microplastics and anthropogenic fibres threatens lakes, but we know little about what factors predict its accumulation. Lakes may be especially contaminated because of long water retention times proximity to pollution sources. Here, surveyed microparticles, i.e., fibres, in surface waters 67 European lakes spanning 30° latitude large environmental gradients. By collating data >2,100 published net tows, found that microparticle concentrations our field survey were higher than previously reported comparable rivers oceans. We then related surrounding land use, chemistry, plastic emissions sites estimated local hydrology, population density, waste production. Microparticle quadrupled as both mismanaged inputs wastewater treatment loads increased catchments. Concentrations decreased by 2 5 over the range forest cover potential in-lake biodegradation, respectively. As debris continues pollute environment, will help contextualise future work, models can inform control remediation efforts.

Riparian plant isotopes reflect anthropogenic nitrogen perturbations: robust patterns across land use gradients

Riparian plants incorporate nitrogen (N) from aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric sources, and their stable isotope compositions (dN) may reflect land use impacts on N sources and transformations over scales of sites to watersheds. We surveyed leaf dN values of 11 common riparian tree, shrub, and herbaceous species from 20 streams and rivers spanning three fifth-order watersheds in northern U...

Eutrophication potential of lakes: an integrated analysis of trophic state, morphometry, land occupation, and land use.

Despite being inside a protected area, Lake Sumidouro has been impacted by the anthropogenic occupation of the surrounding area since the 1970's, compromising the ecological integrity of the lake and the sustainable use of natural resources. This study examined the current trophic classification of the lake and developed methods for improving it through an integrated analysis of morphometric an...

The Use of Monte-Carlo Simulations in Seismic Hazard Analysis in Tehran and Surrounding Areas

Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis is a technique for estimating the annual rate of exceedance of a specified ground motion at a site due to the known and suspected earthquake sources. A Monte-Carlo approach is utilized to estimate the seismic hazard at a site. This method uses numerous resampling of an earthquake catalog to construct synthetic catalogs to evaluate the ground motion hazard a...

analysis of land use changes impacts and demographic changes (case study: taleghan barrier surrounding villages)

the concept of land use transition highlights that land use change is non-linear and is associated with other societal and biophysical system changes. changes in human systems has resulted in changes in the natural system such as changes in land use. land use change causes not only environmental factors like geography and topography are important, but social factors examined such as population ...
